Comic page 1 by HenrikeD Comic page 1 by HenrikeD
Finally it`s finished! I`ve been wanting this page to be finished for so long now! :D
I think it`s far better than all the originals I ever did (believe me, I made many concept for this one) Never could find the right format or had the skills to introduce the setting right, with the right colours and atmosphere and all.
I think this is the best I can do at the moment, I`m really pleased with the result. :)

Comments are very welcome. Since this is the first page I`d like to hear your reactions on how the page appears to you and what you think when you see it. :) Thanks!

Tools, as always: pencil, ink, photoshop cs2.

EDIT:
:wow: :wow: :wow: MY FIRST DD!!!! :excited: Thank you so much for featuring this page Cederseed!!!
I still can`t believe it, I`m in shock! :D And I`m really honoured.

Thanks to everyone, so much, for the lovely comments and faves!

Daily Deviation

Given 2009-11-02
Comic page 1 by *HenrikeD is one of the prettiest opening pages I've seen for a comic. ( Featured by Majnouna )
:iconclockworkviper:
Wow, there are so many things i could say about this piece!
So, first of all, i love the way the pannels flow so beautifully from one to the other which enables the damselfly/dragonfly to fly from one panel to the other as if it really is soaring about!
The first panel is so detailed and stunning itself that it could be submitted as a deviation on its own. The colours are rich yet dark, showing that the rainforest isn't all bright colours.
And the insect. I'm not sure if you meant it like this, but to me it looks like a new animal of some sorts. If this isn't what you meant then sorry! The anatomy isn't right for either a damselfly or a dragonfly. If it's supposed to be one of those, then i suggest you check out a few pictures of them.
But all in all an amazing deviation!:meow:

i still doubt that and its my opinion that to create something from nothing is true art, and that includes even photo manip, because you start with a blank new document and build. but thank you for the encouragement :tighthug:

hmm, well if you look at photography, isn`t that the same thing? You take elements like subject, composition, lighting, colour and combine them in a photo, that only succeeds well when you have the eye to truly see it and the knowhow to use your material, like a masterpainter does when he paints a still life or portrait, it`s capturing a moment, a message or an atmosphere, only in a different medium.

For me, art has to do with creativity and a message, or story even maybe. The medium therefore, is second in place to me. But I guess that`s different to anyone. :)

Way too much blue in the center of the page. Can't see the story. The lower part lakcs detail and looks pretty glued to the whole piece.

I am sure that "wow this is great" "holy s#$t! amazing" "wow how talented you are" didn't get you where you are right now. You are here because of your own hard work and all those praise messages don't really mean nothing. You must accept critics and strive to improve yourself. Draw, draw, draw, that's what i hev been told. I actually ignore the praise comments that are no longer that 4,5 words because i can't find any advice there. Yes, i was seasonable, i think you got something going on there. You wished for something a bit more constructive: have the left lullaby a little lower in the blue background and the right lullaby close to the lower illustration box. That way you will have equillibrium in your piece and better dinamic. No one likes slow paced comics, bare that in mind. You've got to hit them permanently with something, otherwise...
Ok, get to work! I'm looking with interest tosee something new!

Hey hey! Thanks for sharing your opinion! I like how you judged here. Everybody sees art different. By naive i ment childish, without stiking your ears into anatomy and perspective. I think you should try some studies of the anatomy to further your skills.

ah, it`s good that I come by this, your reply didn`t show up in my inbox. :)
Thanks for the more specific details. :) By all means, I didn`t mean to reject the critique, I like getting critique but how it comes through to me really depends on how it`s brought. Your comment was really straight forward and only had negative critique, brought in a pretty strong way. I can imagine from reading your reply that those kind of comments work really well for you, but lot`s of people probably will be thrown off by it. At least, to be speaking for myself, I must admit I was. Because it didn`t show that you actually saw potential in it (which I think I read from your second post that you do). It just sounded like: `it sucks, start over` That`s what I meant with constructive. :)
Of course, if people really mean that, it`s their opinion and it`s ok, and I accept that.
But what I mean to say is that it can throw people off so they`ll miss the critique that can actually help them improve. I work with people daily and what people need is not only to hear what they `do wrong` but also positivity, and, also very important, their strong points. Those are really good to bear in mind too. You can also be blind to a strong andpositive point of yourself, which actually can help you improve too.

About the character of comments..you`ve got an interesting point here but I don`t entirely agree.
I think it depends on with what purpose you post art here. In your case, it`s probably to get advice on how to improve. That`s a great reason and I hope you find the critique you need to continue here, I find it can be hard to get critique.
For me, it`s a reason also, but also to just show my art and hope that someone will look at it for a moment and think: that is just pretty! Art, more specifically things like colour, shapes and backgroundstory can add something to your day, your mood. Things that are visibly pleasant to the eye, beauty, is something that can brighten your day. I often take a moment to look more closely at a piece just to take the beauty of it in. And sometimes I don`t want to critique, I just want the artist to know that I loved just looking at it, that it inspired me. Because it can also be a goal, just beauty can be a goal of art.
In that light, every comment on this page means a lot. First of all people taking the time to visit my page and leave a comment, how short that may be, is to be appreciated. To just say that someone who stops by to say that it`s `wonderful` should be ignored because it`s a short message is not an option for me. Sometimes I can taste in a comment just what I described earlier: `I think it`s pretty and it reminds me of how pretty nature or dragonflies are and I like that` just an example, but I like that apparently it has that effect.
On a more `economical` note, people seem to like it, and if they like it, they`ll hopefully read on. :)

And, pacing, slow or quick, is a tool. You can`t say the one or the other is wrong, it`s only how you use it that matters. I`ve read slow and fast paced comics alike which were very good. It all depends on what story you want to tell and what audience you want to reach. Because, when it comes to audience, some people actually like the slow ones.

Wow, that was a long story. But like I said...interesting stuff!

And of course I meant `reasonable` in my previous reply, instead of `seasonable`. :D

Well, the story is only just beginning, and this is just a prologue page in a very low pace. So there isn`t quite much story going on here yet, do you like fast paced comics? :)
But thanks anyway for taking the time to comment. Your points are seasonable but could be a bit more constructive though. ;)

Thank you very much for your comment and your interest!

The story will play around two girls who find an old way into another world, Janaija, (the world you see a part of here) quite similar to ours but slightly different. A group of archaeologists are exploring a ruin here in the rainforest and find the girls. There is much going on with the ruin and the species of animals living there and amidst it all the girls try to find their way home. :)

There will be more issues though, focusing on more characters of this world in all kinds of different settings, not only jungle.
